About Georgetown University Press

The beginnings of Georgetown University Press can be traced to 1964—and we currently publish approximately forty new books a year, as well as two journals, with an active list of over 500 titles. These publications primarily service the scholarly community, and many also reach into the general reading public. Many help to unite people speaking different languages, literally and figuratively, and all attempt to illuminate, clarify, and respond to the world's most difficult questions.

Our Mission

Georgetown University Press supports the academic mission of Georgetown University by publishing scholarly books and journals for a diverse, worldwide readership. These publications, written by an international group of authors representing a broad range of intellectual perspectives, reflect the academic and institutional strengths of the university. In fulfilling its mission the press will be guided by the following principles:

  • To publish peer-reviewed works of academic distinction, with exceptional editorial and production quality, in five subjects: bioethics; international affairs; languages; political science, public policy, & public management; and religion & ethics.
  • To establish a culture of meaningful employment and professional development, one that emphasizes clear communication as well as respect for the ideas and opinions of all staff members.
  • To operate in a financially responsible manner that encourages planned, deliberate growth in productivity and sales.
  • To be a premier press in our subjects, continuing to advance our reputation and standing in the scholarly and publishing communities.

Going Green at Georgetown

Georgetown University Press is a proud member in good standing of the Green Press Initiative, which was founded in 2001, and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making book publishing a more environmentally sound process. We routinely partner with printers who print on paper that contains at least 30% postconsumer waste (PCW), and we often use paper that has between 60% and 100% recycled content. Increasingly, Georgetown University Press books will qualify for being able to use the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) logo, which carries the guarantee that fiber in the paper was not sourced from endangered forests and that existing forests were not cleared to make way for single-species tree plantations. Being active with the Green Press Initiative and reducing our carbon footprint is a priority for Georgetown University Press.
