Valuable insights into approaches and innovative frameworks for teaching French

Teaching French requires skill and expertise, as well as creativity and imagination. The Art of Teaching French brings together contributions by prominent applied linguists and scholars in French cultural studies, who share valuable insights into pedagogical approaches and innovative frameworks for teaching French that provide instructors with new strategies and fresh ideas. The volume focuses on connections between art and science, theory and practice, language and meaningful content, the classroom and the real world, and teachers and students.

Stacey Katz Bourns, a leading scholar in the field, weaves together essays from researchers with backgrounds in diverse fields of French studies to open teachers to new ways to motivate and inspire students. The contributions include essays on effective and artful instructional practices aligned with theories of second language acquisition, reimagined writing instruction, innovative French pronunciation pedagogy, experiential learning opportunities, and groundbreaking course design that focuses on literature and art to bring students closer to an understanding of the Francophone world's diversity.

Integrating the contributions of well-known scholars, this book will benefit French instructors—of both language and literature—and administrators of language programs.

Reviews

"Katz Bourn's highly readable volume artfully marries theory, research, and practice. The wealth of examples in French make it a rare treasure for French teachers and teacher trainers. It truly merits a place in the library of both novice instructors and seasoned practitioners."—Mary Ellen Scullen, University of Maryland, College Park

"This volume provides insights into course design, self-expression, cultural studies, and more, offering a refreshing focus on learners. Bourns and contributors are motivated not by a quest for the "right" method, but rather by the concept of teaching as a flexible, adaptive, and joyful convergence of art and science."—Cheryl Krueger, Professor of French, University of Virginia
